Journal history

“Ekonomista” is the oldest peer-reviewed journal in economics in Poland, published since 1900 - initially as a weekly and, from 1901, as a quarterly. From 1995 to 2021 the journal appeared bimonthly; beginning in 2022, by decision of the co-publishers, it returned to the quarterly format.

From the outset, the journal helped shape the canon of Polish economic thought: in the interwar period it served as a venue for lively theoretical and policy debates; after 1945 it accompanied discussions of economic calculation under socialism, reform, and development; and after 1989 it engaged with systemic transformation, European integration, and the challenges of contemporary macro- and microeconomics.

Authors who have published in “Ekonomista” include, among others, Oskar Lange, Michał Kalecki, Edward Lipiński, and Włodzimierz Brus. In the postwar period, the editors-in-chief included prominent economists such as Edward Lipiński, Zdzisław Sadowski, and Elżbieta Mączyńska-Ziemacka.

Currently, “Ekonomista” is jointly published by the Polish Economic Association and the Institute of Economics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It publishes articles in Polish and English, upholding high scholarly and ethical standards and seeking to enhance its international visibility. The journal’s archival holdings, including historical volumes, are being progressively made available in digital form.
